English-Info: Plan-B The New Energy in Your Neighbourhood!

The New Energy in Your Neighbourhood!
Part of the worldwide Transition Town Movement
We plan and realise the transition to the
solar age on our own – house by house,
neighbourhood by neighbourhood, borough
by borough .

Basically, the Transition Town concept has
been developed further from the concept of
permaculture. ”Permaculture is the creation of
small paradises here on earth” - a compact
definition by the Australian Bill Mollison. He and
David Holmgren the founder of permaculture
(permanent agriculture) received the
Alternative Nobel Prize in 1981.
It is a holistic approach of the planning of a
habitat, which integrates all local conditions
optimally and uses them sustainably. Hereby,
self-sufficiency with food plays a major role. It
is the combination of symbiotic characteristics
of plants and animals that makes a highly
interconnected local ecosystem possible. Thus,
it is quite opposite to our current industrial
agriculture, which is based on monocultures,
chemistry and an enormous use of energy.
Louise Rooney and Rob Hopkins transferred the
concept of permaculture, which had rather been
used in rural areas, and applied it to a town.
They included two further aspects in their
contemplations: climate change and peak oil.
The usage of fossil fuels as oil, gas or coal
allowed unprecedented technological progress
and for some countries a high standard of life.
But simultaneously, the consumption of these
resources – be it directly or indirectly- is the
cause of most of our current socioenvironmental
problems. Alongside climate
change, which with reference to some regions in
the world should rather be named “climate
crisis”, the expiration of oil is the 2. main topic
because we depend on it completely.
In 2008 Rob Hopkins edited “The Transition
Handbook – From oil dependency to local
resilience”. It is a collection of extraordinary
ideas, experiences, approaches, examples,
practical tools, in order to develop a plan B
together with one's neighbours in one's own
town, borough or neighbourhood. Soon the
return to local and regional economic cycles
will play a decisive role because
the relation between the
amount of oil extraction
and the demand will
be develop in a way
that blows up
its price.

Since 2008, there is
a group of people which engage for a
sustainable and resilient living in their
neighbourhood within Berlin. In this context
'resilience' means the ability of a society to be
resistant to external disorders like a supply
shortfall caused by the scarcity of oil.
People meet weekly, get to know neighbours
from the own neighbourhood, develop positive
visions of coming years together, network with
existing initiatives, organise events, start small
and big projects, eat and celebrate.
This is how a colourful puzzle develops
and everybody can contribute his or her part.
Collectively a new urban development plan
('Energy Decent Action Plan) emerged
bottom up with respect to the
climate crisis and peak oil.

A lot is going on locally:
- A change of mobility
- A change of agriculture
- Ecofriendly, social and aesthetic building
- Direct democratic urban planning
- Sensible curricula & learning by doing
- A local circular economy
- A purposeful extension of renewables
- Intensive energy saving measures
- ...

Do It Yourself-Workshops
Everybody can build his or her own
bamboo bike with new or recycled
parts, bamboo cane, hemp fibre and
epoxy resin!
If you are interested in participating at our
workshops, have look at our website, which
has all information. It is majorly 'Diamant'
bicycle frames that are built (it is the
standard on the streets). Upon consultation,
other forms can be built as well, e.g.
recumbent bike, Cruiser & Chopper or
one for load.

Worldwide and Voluntary Planting of Trees
with WikiWoods.org!

This is an internet platform that enables people
to participate in tree-plant-actions, to organise
them independently or to look for co-planters.
“With your help it was possible to plant more
than 13,000 trees during spring 2010, this is
more than last year! In case you wanna plant
with us again or to organise something
yourselves, subscribe to our co-plant list.”

We want the green city jungle!
Will we have to cut
our way through Berlin
with a machete?
Well, we hope so!
Because we want...
- Community roof gardens
for everybody!
- Intercultural neighbourhood
(roof) gardens!
- Connected biotopes
on the balconies!
- Facade greening for all buildings!
- Fruit trees and vegetables in parks!
- Sustain allotments!
- Spread permaculture!
- green, green, green...
